Questions parents ask

Baby sleep calculator FAQ

Are wake windows scientifically prescribed?

No. They are practical planning estimates. Pediatric sleep-duration guidance focuses on total sleep over 24 hours rather than exact awake intervals.

Why does my baby not match the calculator?

Babies vary. Nap quality, feeding, illness, temperament, development, environment, and family routines all matter. Use the result as a prompt to observe, not a target to enforce.

Should I wake a sleeping baby to protect the schedule?

This site cannot advise that for an individual child. Feeding and medical instructions from your clinician take priority. Ask your pediatrician if you are unsure.

Does sleeping through the night mean no waking?

Babies and adults naturally wake between sleep cycles. Families use the phrase differently. The calculators ask only for estimated sleep time, not whether waking occurred.

What if my baby was premature?

Corrected age may be relevant to developmental expectations. Ask the pediatrician who knows your baby's history.

Can this diagnose a sleep disorder?

No. The site does not diagnose or treat any condition. Persistent concerns, breathing symptoms, unusual sleepiness, feeding difficulty, or growth concerns require professional evaluation.

Why is there no formal total for newborns?

The AASM expert panel did not issue a consensus recommendation for infants younger than 4 months because normal sleep duration and pattern vary greatly.
